Our speaker this week is Geshe Ngawang Phende. If you've never heard him speak, Geshe Phende can clearly articulate Buddhist principles and is a wonderful teacher, so be sure to come! A brief biography is below:

Geshe Ngawang Phende was born in Nepal in 1968. As a young boy he entered Drubthob Rinpoche’s monastery in Nepal where he received his initial monastic training. He joined Drepung Loseling Monastery, south India in 1982 at the age of 12, where he successfully completed his monastic education and passed the Geshe Lharampa examination in 2001. He then attended Guymey Monastery for further Tantric studies and stayed there for a year. Geshe Ngawang was the resident teacher at the Lam Rim Tibetan Buddhist Center in Johannesburg, South Africa for nearly four years. Twice he has been on the Mystical Arts of Tibet tour and at present is one of the resident teachers at Drepung Loseling Monastery Atlanta.

MA Buddhist Art: History and Conservation at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, 2016-2017: The Courtauld is one of the leading centres in the world for education and research in history of art and conservation. This unique one-year MA is offered by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Centre for Buddhist Art and Conservation at The Courtauld. In this full-time, twelve-month course, teaching is mainly concentrated in three 11-week terms, but supervision of the dissertation continues during the summer months (June - September). Students undertake a dissertation which will consider an aspect of the original techniques, conservation, management, curating, history or use of Buddhist art. The MA provides a comprehensive grounding in the history of Buddhism, Buddhist art and its conservation both for those intending to pursue further specialist conservation education, and for others who wish to proceed into related fields such as art-historical research, curating, or site-management. No previous background needed. A significant number of substantial scholarships are available, awarded on the basis of merit and need. Applications are due February 15. Buddhism and East Asian Cultures: Lectures Series, Conference, Forum, and Fieldwork Program: The Wutai International Institute for the Study of Buddhism and East Asian Cultures (WII), Institute for Ethics and Religions Studies (IERS) at Tsinghua University, Buddhist Studies Forum at Fudan University (FU-BSF), and the Buddhist Studies Forum at the University of British Columbia (UBC-BSF) in Vancouver, Canada cordially invite applications for a 10-day program of lecture series, conference/forum, and fieldwork on Buddhism and East Asian Cultures (July 15-25, 2016) at Great Sage Monastery of Bamboo Grove (Dasheng Zhulin si 大聖竹林寺), Mount Wutai 五臺山, and Datong, Shanxi, China.
