Second, we have a special opportunity to join the ceremony at Dharma Jewel Monastery on next Friday Oct 27, 7pm - 10pm, where the abbot of Chung Tai Chan Monastery, Ven. Jian Deng, will come from Taiwan to give a Dharma talk and transmit the Three Refuges and the Five Precepts in a formal ceremony. If you wish to take refuge in the Three Jewels to "officially become" Buddhist, or to take the vows of the Five Precepts to guide you on the path, we need to register by Monday. (All are welcome to attend without registering, but to participate you need to register in advance.) We will provide a ride to those who wish to go, let us know. We will try to arrive early, otherwise overflow seating will be simulcast in the dining room. What is Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels (The Three Refuges)? The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha together possess qualities that are precious like jewels and can lead one to enlightenment. Taking refuge does not mean running away from life. It means living life in a fuller, truer way. On one level, the Buddha (teacher), Dharma (teachings), and the Sangha (monks and nuns who practice) are the Three Jewels. They bring peace to the world and help us thoroughly transcend our negative emotions, sufferings, and achieve awakening. Because we misunderstand our original nature, we wander the cycle of birth and death without finding the way home. Taking refuge is to start the journey homeward. A path that leads you home is a genuine refuge. Places where you can put up your feet and relax are not worthy refuges. Taking refuge is also like a someone traveling for the first time to a distant city. He/she will need a guide to show them which path to follow and some traveling companions to help along the way. ? The Buddha is the guide. ? The Dharma is the path. ? The Sangha are the teachers or companions along the way. There is a special ceremony for taking refuge with the Triple Jewel. With a sincere mind, one recites the following verse in front of an ordained monk or nun. I go to the Buddha for refuge. I go to the Dharma for refuge. I go to the Sangha for refuge. For a Buddhist, taking refuge is the first step on the path to enlightenment. Even if enlightenment is not achieved in this life, one has a better chance to become enlightened in a future life. One who take the precepts is called a lay person. If you wish to be formally recognized as a Buddhist, you are encouraged to first learn and try to understand the teachings? then, participating in the ceremony of taking refuge in the Three Jewels is the first, important step for anyone who wants to become a Buddhist. Why? Because the heart of Buddhism is the Three Jewels of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha? It is about committing one's life towards a path to awakening, which is, in fact, freeing not binding. It is a relationship that includes all sentient beings, not just two people. If we realize that the Buddhist teaching is beneficial or meaningful in our lives, then the next step is to take refuge in the Three Jewels. Different Levels of the Three Jewels: Just like there are many levels of truth (conventional, absolute) in Buddhism, the Three Jewels may be understood on many different levels. We take refuge in the Phenomenal Three Jewels (The Abiding Three Jewels and the Manifested Three Jewels), which are tangible and more easily understood, in order to find and manifest our Buddha-nature in the Principle Three Jewels. Once nirvana is realized?that is, you are fully awakened to the inseparability of the two truths?you embody the Principle Three Jewels. At this point, to speak of a refuge outside of you becomes irrelevant; the Principle Three Jewels are inseparable from you. We will first divide them into two groups, that of the Phenomenal and the Principle. THE FIVE PRECEPTS What are the Five Precepts? In brief, 1. No killing - Respect for life 2. No stealing - Respect for others' property 3. No sexual misconduct - Respect for our pure nature 4. No lying - Respect for honesty 5. No intoxicants - Respect for a clear mind Little by little, one can learn to follow these precepts. If one sometimes forgets them, one can start all over again. Following the precepts is a lifetime job? they will help keep us on the right path toward liberation. Taking refuge with the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha is the first step on the road to enlightenment and solving the problem of existence. ?Why do I exist?? and ?Who am I really?? These are questions all of us must grapple with and decide. They certainly deserve our very careful consideration. The unexamined life is a life lived in vain.
